Code of Ethics

1.0 Purpose
1.1 To provide a general framework of ethical standards for emulation by members
of SLAAED, as persons of high integrity, accountability, professional rectitude and
of exemplary social responsibility, and
1.2 To provide a code with a set of rules binding upon all members of SLAAED
involving liability for disciplinary action, through a due process, against members
by SLAAED, in cases of transgression of these rules by members.
The Code provides the binding set of rules to be observed by all members. Disciplinary
action against members will be based on the Code. Disciplinary action will follow a due
process allowing for members who have deemed to have transgressed the Code of
Conduct to prove their innocence.

2.0 Framework
The framework for ethical professionalism encompasses broadly, the attitudes, concerns
and mores expected by members of SLAAED as persons of high integrity, accountability,
professional rectitude and of exemplary social responsibility.
The indicative set of standards to be voluntarily set for oneself are :-

2.1 SLAAED Member as a Person
In accordance with the societal expectations of a professional educator as an exemplar
of good deportment, conduct and behaviour a SLAAED member shall;
2.1.1 not engage in other livelihoods injurious to the health and well being of the
society,
2.1.2 behave as a well balanced person in the face of ideologies and not take
extreme positions and defend extreme positions,
2.1.3 be prepared always to defend ones fellow members , against injustice, unfair
discrimination and intimidation
2.1.4 uphold principles relating to non violence in conflict resolution, human
rights, the rights of children and women and not engage in or promote practices
violating such rights such as the use of child domestic labour,
2.1.5 demonstrate sensitivity to acts and incidents of violence, towards humans as
well as animals and help and empathize with those who have to suffer owing to
natural and man made incidents as well as owing to indifference and neglect,

2.1.6 uphold and promote principles relating to environmental conservation
and protection and not engage in or promote practices which are detrimental to
environmental conservation and protection

2.2 SLAAED Member as a Professional
The member is regarded as a professional because he/she has mastered a body of
theoretical knowledge and skills. Therefore, it is obligatory to continue to keep his
professional knowledge and skills valid and updated. Therefore,
2.2.1 he/she will share his knowledge and skills with is/her fellows and enthusiastically
support measures aimed at upgrading the knowledge and skills of all teachers.
2.2.2 he/she will support and uphold all measures taken to ensure high entry
qualifications to the profession as the recruitment of persons without
qualifications required for the profession, degrades the profession as a whole.
2.2.3 he/she will not engage in activities which will harm the prestige of the profession
and work boldly to prevent such activities detrimental to the profession on the
part of others as the prestige of the profession depends on the observance of
professional ethics by all members,.

2.2.4 he/she will consider it obligatory to be a member of a professional organization
devoted to education and teaching as the promotion of professional aspects
need specially devoted professional organizations.

2.3 High integrity
Members shall
2.3.2 give evidence, express opinions or make statements only in a truthful manner.
2.3.2 not suppress any relevant and pertinent information in their reports, statements or
testimony.
2.4 Accountability
Members shall
2.4.1 apply universal principles of good governance – rigour, transparency, responsibility,
and control – at all levels of professional activity.
2.4.2 hold paramount the proper utilization of funds in the performance of their
professional duties

2.5 Professional Rectitude
Members shall
2.5.1 promote the principle of engagement of fellow professionals upon the basis of
merit. Members shall build their reputation on merit and shall not compete
unfairly.
2.5.2 at all times conduct themselves in a manner that strives to enhance the
reputation of the SLAAED and their profession
2.5.3 at all times promote and maintain proper standards of professionalism.
2.5.4 avoid any act tending to promote their own interest at the expense of the
dignity and integrity of the profession.
2.5.5 as teachers and supervisors shall not withhold knowledge necessary for the
students to achieve their tasks.
2.5.6 perform professional services only in the areas of their competence as
defined by formal qualifications or subsequent experience.

2.6 Exemplary Social Responsibility
Members shall
2.6.1 refrain from joining organizations or institutions which have overt or covert
aims prejudicial to national interest, even as sinecures.
2.6.2 at all times strive to be aware of the ethical, social, legal and environmental
implications and consequences of their professional pursuits.
2.6.3 not compromise their academic or social standing by way letting the use of
their names as patrons of organizations or institutions which have overt or
covert aims prejudicial to national interest, or which are suspect as regards
their practices towards their clients, even as sinecures.
2.6.4 endeavour at all times to maintain professional services essential to public
welfare.
2.6.5 not use their association with other persons, corporations, or partnerships to
conceal unethical acts.

3.0 CODE OF CONDUCT – SET OF RULES
This code of conduct encompasses broadly, the Attitudes, Concerns and Mores
expected by members of SLAAED as persons of high integrity, accountability,
professional rectitude and of exemplary social responsibility.

3.1 Integrity
Members shall
3.1.1 neither solicit nor accept gratuities, directly or indirectly from contractors or
their agents, or other parties dealing with their clients or employers in connection
with work for which they are responsible

3.1.2 not involve themselves with any business or professional practice which
they know to be fraudulent or dishonest in nature.
3.1.3 when publishing articles shall neither allow or commit plagiarism nor
claim credit for work performed by others.

3.2 Accountability
3.2.1. Members shall not knowingly participate in any act which will result in waste,
or misappropriation of public funds.
3.2. 2Members, as teachers and supervisors shall not appropriate the outputs and
outcomes of the studies of their students in their publications without due
acknowledgement and recognition of the contribution of their students.

3.3 Professional Rectitude
Members shall
3.3.1 not denigrate colleagues .
3.3.2 not falsely or maliciously attempt to impugn the reputation of colleagues.
3.3.3 adhere to the requirements specified in appropriate codes of work practice or
ethical standards

3.4 Social Responsibility
Members shall
3.4.1 at all times not compromise the welfare, health and safety of the community
in the conduct of their professional pursuits
3.4.2 not attempt to influence public policy decisions where there is a probability
of social or economic harm resulting from acting on contradictory or
inconclusive research evidence in matters of education.
